vor Novello Award-winning singer and songwriter Holly Humberstone releases her highly anticipated second EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin. With over 1 million views on YouTube from each of her first two songs released in 2020 (“Deep End”and “Falling Asleep at the Wheel”), it’s no surprise that this coming EP album is highly anticipated. The Walls Are Way Too Thin features six tracks altogether including a music video for each one.

Holly Humberstone - The Walls Are Way Too Thin Review Overview

Holly Humberstone is a British musician who released just released her first LP The Walls Are Way Too Thin. The EP released November 12, 2021.

Holly Humberstone and the EP The Walls Are Way Too Thin has received a lot of acclaim recently including.

  • Ivor Novello Rising Star Award with Apple Music
  • YouTube’s next Artist On The Rise
  • Deezer’s Focus artist
  • Runner up in the BBC Sound of 2021

After her songs from 2017 "Deep End"and "Falling Asleep at the Wheel" gained popularity on YouTube along with some amazing covers (she does a great take on Radiohead Fake Plastic Trees and Bon Ivor Blood Bank) we were excited to see how the EP would turn out.

Album Flow and Tracks

The EP The Walls Are Way Too Thin consists of 6 new songs and there is an accompanying video for each. All of the songs go well together and highlight Holly's singing and songwriting skills. I listened to the entire EP and although it only contains 6 tracks, there are no filler songs and the EP can be listened to on repeat. Overall a really nice Pop / Indie EP and we can hear some influences from early 90's artists of the same genre along with more recent artists such as HAIM.

Holly Humberstone - The Walls Are Way Too Thin Review of Packaging

I currently only have the digital copy so cannot much on the packaging of The Walls Are Way Too Thin release. I have not seen any reviews commenting on any quality issues of either the vinyl or CD. Both look like a standard single disc release and are currently available below from Amazon.

Sound / Mastering / Pressing Quality

Regarding the sound of Holly Humberstone The Walls Are Way Too Thin EP, I was most excited to hear the progression of her song writing and continuing arch of improving her vocal performances. In this regard, she is on a great trajectory to continuing gaining popularity and fans. She has a knack of adding vocal runs to keep songs interesting without overdoing it like a lot of artists.

For me the sound and production of the backing music is my one complaint of the EP. A lot of the songs sound digitally processed and brick walled and are lacking dynamics.

Holly Humberstone - The Walls Are Way Too Thin Review of Lyrics / Music

It is the Holly's lyrics and honest storytelling that has attracted her fans. She has spoken of writing her lyrics so they could be ones fans would want to tattoo on themselves. She explains her lyrics come come from items specific to her life and include everything from her sister’s struggles with mental health to her growing distant from old friends. Holly stated the following regarding her writing and lyrics.

“People can connect to a song more if it’s just me and my unfiltered thoughts,” “That’s what I look for in music that I listen to – a personal connection. Everything I’m going through is universal stuff. Everyone’s been through these situations, it’s not just me”.

The highlights on the EP for me are the title track and "Scarlett".
