Song Themes
K-12 tells a story that many people will be able to relate to. The themes of trauma and anxiety are explored in a unique way that makes the listener feel like they are right there with Martinez.
The theme of the album covers each year of school through the 13 tracks, kindergarten – Grade 12. As expected, most of the themes of the songs are around difficulties and anxieties faced during school. It addresses the challenge of finding a place to belong, whether in friendships, the physical world, or romantically.
Teachers Pet Song Meaning
The song “Teachers Pet” is about a student who is being bullied by her teacher. The student feels like she can’t tell anyone because she’s scared that her teacher will make her life even harder at school.
Martinez sings from the perspective of the student, and her lyrics are heartbreaking. She pleads for someone to help her, but feels like she’s all alone in the situation. The song is a powerful reminder of how difficult it can be for students who are being bullied by their teachers.
Rating: 9 / 10

The production is done well, and the music has a clear sound. The song writing makes it easy for Martinez to show off her unique voice which really brings the lyrics to life in the best way possible. It is bot the best produced album and could use some help in the dynamics but still make’s Melanie’s vocals show through.
